“Designated Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital” – Griffin Hospital has been recognized as one of the nation’s most patient-centered hospitals by Planetree, Inc. Griffin is one of only six hospitals nationwide to have achieved this distinction since the designation program’s inception in 2007.
“100 Best Companies to Work for in America” – Griffin was named to the FORTUNE "100 Best Companies to Work for" list for the ninth consecutive year, a feat achieved by no other hospital, ranking 49th in 2008. Griffin was ranked 4th in 2006, the highest ranking ever for a hospital.
"2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare" - The Griffin Hospital management team was selected as the 2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare in the nation for community and mid-size hospitals by HealthLeaders Media. In announcing the award, HealthLeaders said, "The leadership team at Griffin Hospital recognized years ago that to reach their goals of being a national model would require empowering the entire organization. That combination of an ambitious mission and an inclusive leadership culture has earned Griffin Hospital the honor as the 2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare for community and mid-size hospitals."
“Training Magazine Top 125” – Recognized in 2008 by Training Magazine for its training and workforce development programs.
2007 Premier/Care Science Select Practice National Quality Leader – Selected for demonstrating superior clinical outcomes and exceptional efficiency in patient care. Of more than 4,700 hospitals considered for this award, only 49 hospitals were selected in 2007, putting Griffin Hospital’s performance in the top 1% of hospitals nationwide.
“Top 100 Leadership Development Program” 2007 & 2006 – Leadership Excellence Magazine – Named Griffin Hospital one of the “Top 100 Leadership Development Programs. Griffin Hospital ranked 19th in the Non-profit Organizations Category. The selection was based on seven criteria: Vision/Mission, Accountability/Measurement, Involvement/Participation, Presenters/Presentations, Take-home Value/results for customers, Outreach of the programs and products.
Excellence in the Advancement of Patient-Centered Care –Picker Institute –Recognizes achievements, such as Planetree’s, for organizations which have recognized and acted upon the need to improve the lives of patients by giving consideration to the care of patients “through the patient’s eyes”. Planetree’s efforts have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, the ability to make a difference in improving the patient’s experience as we attempt to create a better health care system for all.
2007 Health Leadership Fellow – Connecticut Health Foundation – Keesha M. Mayes, Program Coordinator at the Valley Women’s Health Coordination Center at Griffin Hospital was one of twenty individuals selected by the Connecticut Health Foundation to participate as a 2007 Health Leadership Fellow. CHF is the state’s largest independent, nonprofit grant making foundation dedicated to improving the health status of people of Connecticut, especially the underserved.
National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) – Griffin President and CEO Patrick Charmel was appointed by the U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services to a three-year term on the Advisory Council.
Healing Hospital List 2006 – Journal of Sacred Work – Named as one of ten of America’s Healing Hospitals for 2006. The hospitals named are cited for having developed cultures of Radical Loving Care characterized by an exceptional focus on caring for caregivers, who in turn do an extraordinary job caring for patients. “Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence” – 2008 and 2006 (top 5% of hospitals nationally) – Patients receiving care at a hospital rated in the top five percent in the country have, on average, a 27 percent lower chance of mortality and a 14 percent lower risk of complications.
Fierce Healthcare – “Ten Most Innovative Acute Care Hospitals”. Fierce Healthcare, a leading independent source of healthcare industry news, named Griffin Hospital on of the ten most innovative hospitals.
“Best Acute Care Hospital Awards” from Total Benchmark Solutions. TBS ranked Griffin 19th, 21st and 101st nationally for the care the hospital provided to heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia patients over three consecutive years.
“Innovator of the Year Award” for 2006 – Business New Haven magazine recognized Griffin Hospital as a business innovator, an award typically presented to a technology or manufacturing company.
“Gold Connecticut Innovation Award” for 2005 – Connecticut Quality Improvement Partnership – for improving Clinical Quality.
John D. Thompson Distinguished Visiting Fellow Award 2006” – Yale University – Awarded to Griffin Hospital President Patrick Charmel. The fellowship honors Professor Thompson and his distinguished contribution as an educator and researcher in health administration, including his pioneering work in developing the Medicare payment system. The purpose of the fellowship is to bring a leader in health administration to Yale’s public health school to share their career experiences with current students and to discuss emerging challenges in health administration.
“The Disney Way” – Spotlighted in the business book published in November 2006 along with Ernst and Young, Four Seasons Hotels, The Cheesecake Factory and Men’s Warehouse.
Fire Them Up!: 7 Simple Secrets to: Inspire Colleagues, Customers, and Clients; Sell Yourself, Your Vision, and Your Values; Communicate with Charisma and Confidence - Featured in the business book by communications coach Carmine Gallo published in September 2007.
AARP’s Modern Maturity magazine – named Griffin Hospital as one of fifteen “Hospitals with Heart”. AARP researchers consulted with dozens of caregivers, hospital administrators and other experts. AARP researchers selected the top 15 facilities “most respected by their peers that combine first-rate traditional care with innovations such as quality dining services, Eastern healing techniques and aesthetically pleasing surroundings".
“Top 100 Performance Improvement Leader Hospital 2004” – Solucient – Griffin Hospital was recognized for developing consistent and effective organization-wide performance improvement across critical measures at a faster rate than other U.S. hospitals over a five year period.
“Healthcare Book of the Year 2004” – American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) – “Putting Patients First” Co-Authored and edited by Griffin President Patrick Charmel and Planetree President Susan Frampton was named the healthcare book of the year. The book about implementing the Planetree patient-centered care model, now in its second printing, has sold more than 10,000 copies.
